History

Finds evidence of a settlement by humans since Neolithic times. Also, Romans and Arabs have left traces of their presence. At the time of the reign of Sancho I (1185-1211) was located here, a hostel ( Portuguese: Albergaria ). For the first time officially mentioned was the present town as Albergaria de Poiares than him in 1195 in connection with the hostel first limited civic rights ( foral ) were awarded.

In 1836 the county was first formed, as Santo André de Poyares. After several resolutions and rearrangements he remained an independent circuit since 13 January 1898. On August 17, 1905, the villages of Santo André de Poiares and Aldeia Nova were merged to the present place and raised to Vila ( town ).
