Vilja Savisaar-Toomast

Vilja Savisaar - Toomast ( born August 15, 1962 in Antsla ) is an Estonian politician. It belongs to the Estonian Centre Party (Estonian Eesti Keskerakond ). 2009 Vilja Savisaar was elected as an MP in the European Parliament.

Life and Politics

Vilja Savisaar - Toomast was born as Vilja Laanaru in South-Estonian county Võru. After her high school graduation in 1980, she studied psychology at the State University of Tartu (Tartu Riiklik Ülikool ). In 1985, she took off her exams. From 1988 to 1990 she worked as a psychologist in the private sector.

From 1990 to 2002 Savisaar was an editor at various Estonian newspapers. In addition, it was also politically active: 1990-1992 as the personal assistant of Prime Minister Edgar Savisaar, who later became her husband, and from 1992 to 1994, Assistant to the Vice President of the Estonian Parliament. In 1997 she joined the Estonian Centre Party. 1999 Savisaar was briefly mayor of Tallinn district Nõmme, then deputy mayor in 2002 and 2005-2007 mayor of Tallinn district Põhja -Tallinn. From 1999 to 2002 she served on the city council of Tallinn.

2003 Vilja Savisaar as deputies of the Estonian Centre Party in the Estonian parliament ( Riigikogu ) was chosen. In the elections to the European Parliament, she was elected on 7 June 2009 as one of the MEPs of the Centre Party.

Savisaar - Toomast the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe has joined. She is a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and the Delegation of the committees EU -Kyrgyzstan and EU-Uzbekistan Parliamentary Cooperation EU-Kazakhstan, and for relations with Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Mongolia. As a deputy she is in the Committee on Regional Development.

Private life

Vilja Savisaar from 1996 to 2009 (third) wife of the chairman of the Estonian Centre Party and former Estonian Prime Minister Edgar Savisaar (* 1950), who is currently mayor of Tallinn. The marriage produced a daughter emerged.

In July 2010, Vilja Savisaar married the Estonian opera singer Taimo Toomast (* 1963). He brought three children into the marriage.
