Vilkitsky Island (East Siberian Sea)

The Wilkizki Island (Russian Остров Вилькицкого, Ostrow Wilkizkogo ) is a small uninhabited island in the East Siberian Sea, a part of the sea of the Arctic Ocean. You geographically belongs to the group of De Long Islands, part of the New Siberian Islands, administratively to the Russian Republic of Sakha (Yakutia ).

Geography

The Wilkizki Island is located about 560 kilometers north of the northern coast of Siberia, 88 kilometers northeast of the island of New Siberia, and 40 km south of Schochow Island. With a land area of ​​1.5 km ², it is the smallest of the De Long Islands represents the up to 70 -meter-high island is glaciated, its surface is dominated by tundra with low-growing grasses, mosses and lichens.

History

In contrast to the other De Long Islands Bennett, Henrietta and Jeannette ( discovered in 1881 ) was discovered this island only on 20 August 1913 in the framework of the Russian " Hydrographic Expedition of the Arctic Ocean " by Alexi Schochow. It is named after Boris Wilkizki, the leader of the expedition.
