Villa Crespo

Villa Crespo is a district of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. It is located southwest of Palermo and is 3.8 km ². Villa Crespo has 89 859 inhabitants and a population density of 23,647 inhabitants per km ² (as of 2001).

Description

Villa Crespo is predominantly inhabited by the middle class and developed around the shoe factory Fábrica Nacional de Calzado, which was opened in 1888. The district was named after Mayor Antonio F. Crespo. On April 11, 1894, the San Bernardo church was consecrated, and there were several " Conventillos ", including the famous Conventillo de la Paloma.

Villa Crespo was considered a historic Jewish district of Buenos Aires, today there are several synagogues. Currently the population is essentially mixed as in the rest of Buenos Aires.

The economic center of the district is located around the intersection of Avenida Scalabrini Ortiz and Corrientes Avenue.

Among the famous people of the district include the Tango Osvaldo Pugliese pioneer, the author Leopoldo Marechal and the Argentine poet and Cervantes Prize winner Juan Gelman.

The football club CA Atlanta is located in the district. The 2001 turned in an Argentine- Dutch co-production film Bolivia plays for the most part in a cafe of Villa Crespo.
