Villa Olmo, Via Cantoni is located in Como, in Lombardy, Italy.

History

The villa was built in the classical style on behalf of the Marquis Innocenzo Odescalchi 1782-1797. We started the construction under the Swiss architect Innocenzo Regazzoni from Balerna and completed by the architect Simone Cantoni from Ticino, with the assistance of Domenico, Carlo Luca and Giuseppe Pozzi and sculptor Caraballi.

The name Villa Olmo is derived from a century-old elm (Italian Olmo ), which stood here. After the death of Innocent Odescalchis in 1824 the villa became the property of the Raimondi family. The villa accommodated many famous personalities, including Napoleon and Metternich. Marshal Radetzky also stayed here as Giorgio Raimondi had to flee in 1848 in the Ticino, as he supported the uprising against the Habsburgs Como. In 1859, he returned and invited Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Villa Olmo one who married Giuseppina Raimondi's daughter here.

The heirs sold the Villa Raimondi 1883 Duke Guido Visconti Modrone, who made major modifications under the architect Emilio Alemagna. Thus, the lateral stables were demolished and the entrance area of ​​the villa rebuilt by breaking out of the ceiling in a large hall. A small theater was built and redesigned the garden behind the villa into an English park.

1924 Villa of the municipality of Como was purchased. For the hundredth anniversary of the death Alessandro Volta, an international exhibition in the Villa was established in 1927. Since 1982 it is the seat of the " Centro Volta" and is also used for numerous exhibitions, conferences and events.
