Villa Opicina

Opicina (also Villa Opicina; Opčine Slovenian, German Optschinach; during Fascism Poggio Reale del Carso ) is an Italian town in the province of Trieste and the suburb 4 km from Trieste. The community lies on the edge of the Karst Plateau on the border with Slovenia. The population is characterized by a larger minority of Slovenians.

History

The name comes from the Celtic Opicina and means rock. Opicina was mentioned for the first time under the name Optchena in documents from the year 1308. Originally with a more rural character of the village developed in the early 20th century into a trade and craft center.

  • Tram de Opcina: Opicina is especially known for the historically significant and technically exceptional, partly operated as a railway funicular tram Tram de Opcina (Italian Tranvia di Opicina ), which was introduced in 1902 and connects the center of Opicina with Trieste (Piazza Oberdan ). Originally, the tram had a central importance for the development of the hinterland of Trieste. Thus, the tram carried 1913 459.000 passengers, one of which belonged to the majority of the local population. Today it has lost its significance as an important means of transport for local people and is now rather than rely tourist attraction on large subsidies.   • Obelisk of Opicina: This column was erected in 1830 on the outskirts of the village to commemorate the visit of Emperor Francis I of Austria, and to commemorate the opening of the link road from Trieste to the Austrian hinterland.
