Villa Poppaea

Excavations in Oplontis, an ancient town on the site of the present Torre Annunziata, archaeologists came in 1964 to the mansion of a noble family that had been buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. They found that the exposure of the building on an amphora inscription " Secundo Poppaeae ", which refers to a freedman of Poppaea, and a pitcher of the seal " L. Arriani (A) mphionis ", a brickyard owned by Poppaea, was wearing. Therefore, there was speculation that Poppaea Sabina ( * approx 30/32 AD, † AD 65 ), the second wife of Nero, or their family, the owners of the property were. Later, a statue has been found allegedly carrying the traits of Poppaea. In many publications, especially in Italy, the property "Villa Poppaea " is called, which at least to distinguish it from the well exposed in Torre Annunziata Villa of Lucius Crassius Tertius.

The villa was built approximately from the middle of the 1st century BC, which has a (architectural style), reminiscent of the magnificent wall paintings from the heyday of the Second style to those of the Mysteries Villa and the Villa Boscoreale, and from the masonry incertum opus reticulatum and opus quasi leaves close. It is the most characteristic and (with more than 3000 square meters of covered space! ) Greatest example of suburban villas, which were found in the region around Herculaneum, Pompeii and Stabiae so far.

The building complex consists of a number of rooms and you enter him from the garden side, as the villa is not yet exposed in its entirety. Facilities include a large swimming pool was just like a wine press. In addition to the numerous living, sleeping, and bathing areas, the owner, there was also extensive servants' areas including accommodation for them and plenty of outdoor space with protected and covered terraces, an orchard and a number of plane trees with 100 trees.

The villa was added to the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO on 4 December 1997 together with Pompeii and Herculaneum.
