Villafranca di Verona

Villafranca di Verona is a city in the province of Verona. It is located in the southwest of the region Veneto, near the border with Lombardy.

Geography

Villafranca is 20 km south of Verona, with 32,912 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) is the second largest city of the province. It consists of the districts ( Frazioni ) Alpo, Dossobuono, Pizzoletta, Rizza, Rosegaferro, Quaderni and Caluri.

History

Due to its location on the Via Postumia was the site of the Roman Empire, founded in 15 BC as a Roman camp, well developed. On March 9, 1185 Villafranca was founded by the city of Verona as a colony and received tax-exempt status granted what in the name Villafranca ( Freistadt) reflected. The colony was populated with 180 free peasant families and also served as defensive military purposes. For a large -scale square city wall was built with towers and trenches.

1859 here the preliminary peace of Villafranca was concluded, which ended the Sardinian War.
