The red footed Atlas widow ( Vidua chalybeata ) is a bird of the family of the widow birds. The species is occasionally kept as an ornamental bird in Europe.

Description

Rotfuß Atlas widows reach a height of 11 centimeters. The male has a black plumage that shines green blue in breeding plumage. The beak is bright yellow, the feet and legs are red. In plumage it resembles the female, which has a light brown top. The underside is whitish and goes to the chest and flanks in a Brownish.

Lifestyle and dissemination

The red footed Atlas widow is a brood parasite of Senegalamarants which belongs to the family of finches. Rotfuß Atlas widows lay an egg in the nest depending on the host bird. There the young Atlas widow bird is raised together with the finch boys. Reputation and singing of the adult red footed Atlas widows are similar to those of Senegalamarants.

The distribution of red footed Atlas widow ranges from Senegal to the east and south-west Africa. Their food is grass and millet seeds.
