Villanueva de Oscos

Villanueva de Oscos is a municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias, in northern Spain.

Location

The community is bounded by Castropol and Vegadeo in the north, in the east of Illano, Taramundi in the west, and San Martín de Oscos and Santa Eulalia de Oscos in the south

History

Finds from the Stone Age, confirm the early settlement of the region. The Romans had several castles whose traces are still discernible today.

The Way of St. James

The Cistercian Monastery ( Monasterio de Santa María de Villanueva ) is a station on the Camino de Santiago Camino del Norte.

Transport links

From Vegadeo direction ( 20 km) towards Los Oscos on the AS -11, exit Garganta, the AS -13 to follow. Oviedo Airport, 185 miles and Rozas.

Natural site

The predominantly of limestone and sandstone base with the O Filso ( 1,202 m) as highest point is typical of this coastal, forest-rich region. The Rio Vilanova, a tributary of the Rio Suaron.

As in many parts of Asturias there by proximity to the Gulf Stream here an almost Mediterranean climate with warm dry summers but cold winters ago, in the fall it comes sometimes to relatively strong storms.

Economy

As in many parts of Asturias agriculture since ancient times is the largest source of income which is confirmed by many ancient granaries here. The proximity to the Ria del Eo and the wooded area make the tourism industry to grow very strongly. Trade and production takes place in small and medium-sized businesses. Many farmers have specialized in the production of cider apples for the Asturian Sidra which is a " national drink " here. Also, two cattle markets are held here:

  • Feria de Ganado anual in La Garganta July 26 and 29 September
