Villarrica is a university town and health resort in the center of the southern Paraguay and has about 55,000 inhabitants (calculated 2006). The nearby mountainous Ybytyruzú National Park is attractive for tourists.

It is the capital of the department Guairá. Originally the city was founded on May 14, 1570 under the name of Villa Rica del Espiritu Santo of the conquistadors Ruy Diaz de Melgarejo on the banks of the Paraná River, and only in 1682 moved to its present location, then wandered the location of the legend, seven times on different hill. These seven hills together form the current urban area. In the late colonial period, the city prospered and Asunción was almost equal, until it was almost completely destroyed during the Triple Alliance War in importance. In 1889, she was joined by the Paraguayan railway line with Asunción.

Villarrica is bordered to the north by Yataity and Mbocayaty, Félix Pérez Cardozo to the west and Itapé, in east direction to Colonia Independencia and Eugene A. Garay Numi, and south to San Salvador and Borja.
