Villarrica (volcano)

The Villarrica volcano south of Pucón

Villarrica is a 2840 m high active volcano in Chile, which is located in the Araucanía region bordering Argentina. To the north of the volcano are the city of Pucón and Villarrica Lake.

The first recorded eruption was in 1558. 1575 the city of Villarrica was destroyed by an earthquake, with 350 inhabitants died. Other major outbreaks followed in 1640 and 1948. 1971 there was a mudslide, which was produced by melting of ice and hot lava. The mudflow ( lahar ) destroyed a row of houses, agricultural land and bridges.

Over the past 500 years, more than 50 outbreaks were registered. The volcano is still active today.

The Villarrica volcano in Villarrica National Park is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Chile. In the summer months, regular guided tours go to the edge of the crater, which must be overcome, even for inexperienced climbers.
