Ville-Marie (Montreal)

Ville- Marie is one of 19 arrondissements of the city of Montreal in the Canadian province of Québec. In 2011, the 16.5 km ² large city district counted 84 013 inhabitants. Ville- Marie is the downtown Montreal.

Geography

Ville- Marie is located in the eastern part of the Ile de Montréal, between Mont Royal and the St. Lawrence River. It is the downtown Montreal with the most important institutions, facilities and buildings. The district includes the offshore islands of Ile Sainte -Hélène and Île Notre -Dame. Named the district is named after the 1642 built Fort Ville- Marie at the Pointe -à- Callière, the site of the first French settlement. The district boundaries are essentially the city limits of Montreal in the late 19th century, before the first incorporations.
