Villena

Villena is a historically significant city in Spain. It is located in the Valencian Community in the province of Alicante.

History

Villena goes back to an ancient Arab foundation. Witness of the Arab Castle (Castillo de la Atalaya ) and the narrow and steep streets. At the Plaza de Santiago, you can learn the different eras of history. So the Gothic James Church, the Renaissance architecture of City Hall, the 19th century in the Museo del Festero ( patron saint's Museum) and the modernism in the Casa de la Cultura ( House of Culture ).

Attractions and Events

  • The Town Hall is the Archaeological Museum, the Treasure of Villena, a famous Iberian treasure, which contains more than 10 kg of gold.
  • In Chapí Theatre musical works are performed continuously.
  • From 4 to 9 September, there are every year the " Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos " instead. These fiestas go on for more than two centuries ago and is based on the conquest of the city in 1240. Reconquista This is traditionally celebrated with exhibition battles of the Moors and Christians.

Villena has a lively nightlife around Plaza de Santiago.
