Villeneuve-sur-Yonne

Villeneuve -sur -Yonne is a commune with 5315 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Yonne, in the Bourgogne region (Burgundy ). It is the administrative seat of the eponymous canton of Villeneuve -sur- Yonne.

Geography

The city is situated on the banks of the river Yonne between the towns of Joigny and Sens

History

  • Villeneuve -sur -Yonne was founded in 1163 on the orders of King Louis VII in order to protect the borders of the kingdom of France better against the County of Champagne can. There a bridge over the Yonne was built and the town square strictly according to the Roman model, built with massive ramparts.
  • Philip II, the son of King Louis VII held here in 1204 Parlement ( royal court sessions).
