Villeurbanne

Villeurbanne is a commune in the Rhône department in the Rhône- Alpes region. The industrial city with 145 034 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) is located on the eastern outskirts of Lyon. Even before Montreuil and Roubaix Villeurbanne is the most populous cities in France those who are not a department prefecture or sub-prefecture of an arrondissement.

History

The city's name is derived from villa urbana, a Roman estate, which was located in present-day district Cusset. The area belonged first to the Burgundian kingdom, then to the Frankish Empire, ultimately to the kingdom Arelat. As part of the Dauphiné came Villeurbanne in 1349 to France. Up into the 19th century Villeurbanne was a small rural community, the first city mayor, Étienne Dubourg was determined on the eve of the French Revolution. 1810 census revealed a 1,903 inhabitants. 1837 was the Rhone, which until then was kicked time and again on the shore, contained by dikes. In the context of industrialization Villeurbanne was a rapidly growing suburban workers, which has remained to the present day political left. Mayor since 2001, Jean -Paul Bret of the Parti Socialiste.

Attractions

There are City Hall and the Theater an der named after a former mayor Place Lazare Goujon. The architect Mario Botta designed a library in 1980 ( Maison du livre de l'image et du son ). Also worth seeing is the 1927-1934 built in the style of the Classic Modern high-rise ensemble Gratte -Ciel. Villeurbanne features with the Parc de la Feyssine included a 40 -acre city park.

In the near Villeurbanne, the French war cemetery la Doua is ( in French: Nécropole national de la Doua or Cimetière militaire de la Doua nationally ).

In the Urban Research Institute, University of Lyon have their headquarters

Culture

Culturally significant is the Théâtre National Populaire.

Very famous is the Transbordeur, a concert hall in a former factory building, where even the likes of Marianne Faithfull, Nick Cave and Stephan Eicher have occurred.

Economy

Based in the city are chemical, metal and electrical industry.
