Vilma von Webenau

Vilma of Webenau (sometimes Wilma ) (* February 15 1875 in Constantine Opel, † October 9, 1953 in Vienna) was an Austrian- German composer.

Life

Vilma of Webenau studied music in Munich and Vienna, where he was the first private student of Arnold Schoenberg. With him, they took from 1898 / 99-1902 harmony and composition lessons and followed him even when he moved to Berlin in 1900. Thereafter she lived as a music teacher in Vienna. 1907, their work was first performed in Vienna: " The early student Vilma of Webenau whose music Schoenberg introduced in his first student concert in November 1907 in Vienna, and the composers listed in the same concert Ivanov and Karl Horowitz, as Erwin Stein as a composer, have the research so far apparently not interested, here is a gap, while they had Schoenberg also held important as Alban Berg, Anton Webern and Heinrich Jalowetz who came in the same concert word ".

Another teacher of her was Fritz Cortolezis. She was a member of the club of Viennese musicians who enters today within the women's movement for a coexistence of men and women. Apart from Maria Bach (1896-1978) and Mathilde Kralik of Meyrswalden (1857-1944) she was one of the most prominent personalities of the club.

Vilma of Webenaus musical legacy is situated in the Music Collection of the Austrian National Library. Even there they signed their works - if at all - simply with " Vilma Webenau ". Her works are the only consideration received or known a Schoenberg pupil, of which there has been approximately 52 known by name who have been taught for the most part 1917-1920 by Schoenberg. A small portion of postcards and letters from Vilma of Webenaus hand is owned by the Arnold Schönberg Center.

In the obituary of the Ladies Club said: " She lived and died in poverty, dependent on the income from their small pension, in a modest cabinet in the 21st district never came a lawsuit over her lips, she was happy and was grateful for any attention. and the last pleasure afforded her the artistically perfect reproduction of their six songs from the cycle of earthly and heavenly love. " None of us knew about their disease, from the proximal end thereof. the loving Christmas greeting from the line of women's clubs came back unopened. modesty, as she was in life, they passed away. " She was buried in the Viennese central cemetery, however, a grave is untraceable.
