Vilniaus žinios

Vilniaus žinios (German: News Vilna ) was a newspaper that was published 1904-1909 in Vilnius.

History

The newspaper was published as the first legal newspaper in Lithuanian, after the Lithuanian press ban was lifted on May 7, 1904. The first issue appeared on December 23, 1904, the last numbers after 1175 on 17 March 1909. Vilniaus žinios was founded by Petras Vileišis who created them in his printing and officially served as editor. In fact, the newspaper was initially published by Jablonski and Jonas Povilas Višinskis, later by Jonas Kriaučiūnas, Juozas Tumas - Vaižgantas, Jonas Vileišis and others.

First, the interest in the new newspaper was great, the circulation reached 1905, the number of 6000 copies. The employees of the newspaper were co-organizers of the Great Assembly of Vilnius at the end of the year 1905., But the interest waned soon thereafter from when the paper strove to an impartial position and published news from around the country. Vilniaus žinios it was not possible to develop a strictly regulated journalistic profile, the people involved changed frequently. The Catholic peasantry was alienated at the beginning by a anti-religious attitude. Juozas Tumas - Vaižgantas promised the end of 1906, when he became the new editor to depart from that position. This, however, saved the newspaper does not, as this liberal, urban intelligentsia was lost as a readership. The rest went back to 2000 copies and early 1907, the newspaper broke.

After a break of several months busy Petras Vileišis the new newspaper and sold it in October 1907, a company owned by Jonas Vileišis and others. Vilniaus žinios now was based on the positions of the Lithuanian Social Democrats. This alienated the Catholic priests and the rural population even more, the rest fell further. In March 1909, the newspaper ran again in financial difficulties and was abandoned.
