Vilnohirsk

Wilnohirsk (Ukrainian Вільногірськ; Russian Вольногорск / Volnogorsk ) is a city of regional significance ( місто областного значення / misto oblastnoho snatschennja ) in the center of Ukraine, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with 23,769 inhabitants (December 2012)

Geography

The city is located 96 km west of Dnipropetrovsk south of the upper course of the 42 km long Samotkan (Ukrainian: Самоткань ), a tributary of the Dnieper.

History

The town was founded on August 12, 1956 was established here as the residence for the workers of a titanium mine and processing combine. On 16 June 1958 he has been derived from the nearby village Wilni Chutory ( Вільні Хутори ) in Wilnohirsk renamed. In 1965 he was awarded the status of a city and in 1990 the status of an independent city.
