Vilters-Wangs

Vilters -Wangs (until 1996 officially called Vilters ) is a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen. It is located in the constituency Sarganserland.

Geography

Vilters- Wangs is located on the western slopes of the Rhine Valley at the motorway junction Sarganserland. The municipality extends to the Grey horns.

History

On the castle hill Severgall above Vilters some finds from the Neolithic Age, the Bronze Age, the Spätlatèner as well as the Roman period have been made. Vilters -Wangs belonged ecclesiastically to Mels. In 1487 the town became a parish.

In the late Middle Ages it came between Vilters and Wang because of Tobel Valeis to March disputes, so the Abbey of Pfäfers the damaged St. Medards Church 1785 let rebuild. In 1816 there were between Vilters and Wang to a merger, after both part of the political community were Bad Ragaz.

1800 a fire destroyed the village with the exception of the church, the rectory and the mill, another fire raged, 1909. Repeats were the Rhine valley and the village of floods are concerned, in 1764 and 1840. Farmers took advantage of the Alps and the Rhine valley ( commons Baschär and Rheinau ) as grazing areas.

In modern times, agriculture won close to the village and in Rheinau important. Economic conditions improved after the correction of springing in Vilterser Saar 1865-76, and later the Vilterser Bach was installed. The company was established in 1928 Elco ( Looser ) & Co. (oil and gas furnaces ) presented soon an important economic factor in the village dar.

Since 1950, there is a private boys' secondary school Sonnenberg. In 2000, the merger of the Primarschulgemeinde Vilters and Wangs and the upper school community Vilters the school community Vilters was.

Tourism

The community has a large share of the Pizol area, which is a popular tourist attraction during the winter and summer. In addition to hiking, there is also a large network of chairlifts and gondolas.
