Viluppuram district

The district Viluppuram (Tamil: விழுப்புரம் மாவட்டம், also: Villupuram ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Administrative center of the district is the eponymous city Viluppuram.

Geography

The district Viluppuram located in the northeast of Tamil Nadu. By 7185, it is the largest area district of the state. In the east, the district share of the Coromandel coast in the Gulf of Bengal. Neighboring districts are Cuddalore in the South, Salem West, Dharmapuri in the northwest, in the north of Tiruvannamalai and Kanchipuram in the northeast and the district of the same name Puducherry Union territory in the east.

Only in the west, the district share of the Kalrayan Hills and the Gingee Hills, isolated foothills of the Eastern Ghats. The district Viluppuram is divided into the eight taluks Sankarapuram, Kallakkurichi, Ulundurpettai, Tirukkoyilur, Viluppuram, Gingee, Tindivanam and Vanur.

History

The district Viluppuram goes back to the South Arcot district. This, the British had founded after 1801 adopted the rule of the Nawabs of Arcot and had the area incorporated into the province of Madras. After Indian independence, the district South Arcot came in 1956 to the newly formed State of Madras (now Tamil Nadu ). In 1993, the South Arcot District was divided into the districts of Cuddalore and Viluppuram.

Population

According to the Indian census of 2011, the district Viluppuram has 3,463,284 inhabitants. Compared to the last 2001 census its population by 17.0 percent, slightly faster than in the middle of Tamil Nadu ( 15.5 per cent ) had grown. The population density is 482 inhabitants per square kilometer below the average Tamil Nadu ( 555 inhabitants per square kilometer). The district Viluppuram is very rural: only 14.7 percent of the district 's population lives in cities. The degree of urbanization is among the lowest in Tamil Nadu and is well below the average of 48.5 percent. The literacy rate is 72.1 percent, well below the average for the state ( 80.3 percent) and even lower than the all-India average ( 74.0 percent).

The population of the district provide Hindus with 92.1 percent according to the census, the vast majority. There are also minorities of Christians ( 3.9 percent ) and Muslims (3.7 per cent).

Attractions

While the district capital Viluppuram is a transportation hub without significant sights, is located in the north of the district Gingee place of tourist interest. Here are the fortresses Gingee and Rajagiri, both of which date back to the 13th century and houses the ruins of palaces, temples and mosques from the time of changing Hindu and Muslim rulers. North of Pondicherry in the territory of the district Viluppuram is the model city of Auroville, founded by Sri Aurobindo movement.
