In the two municipalities of Angueira and Vilar Seco Mirandés is still spoken, the only regional language of Portugal.

History

Archaeological finds prove the prehistoric settlement of the area, including an existing until Roman times Lusitanian Castro- fortification of the place Atalaia, from which developed Vimioso. For the first time officially mentioned the present town was in 1187, when King Sancho I the local area took possession for the purpose of building a city. However, the resettlement took place only under his grandson, King Sancho II.

Vimioso was under the administration of Miranda do Douro, to King Manuel I in 1516 the location of the Vila ( town ) rose, gave him a town charter, and made ​​it the seat of a new, same circle.

Culture and sights

In addition to some stone fountains and historic public buildings include a number sacred to the monuments of the circle, including the nave Mannerist church Igreja de Paroquial Vimioso (also Igreja de São Vicente) from the 16th century. The historical town center as a whole is a listed building.
