Viña del Mar is a city in Chile. It is located in the agglomeration of Valparaíso and is equipped with 294 553 inhabitants fourth largest city in the country (as of 2005). Situated on a bay of the Pacific city is known as a fashionable resort.

History

The city was ( Viña Spanish ) by Pedro de Valdivia founded at the location of a vineyard. Actually Valdivia separated two large haciendas, the South was called ' Viña de la Mar' and the Northern ' Las Siete Hermanas '. 1855 a railway line between Valparaíso and Viña del Mar has been established.

Viña del Mar only obtained on May 30, 1878 city rights, before it belonged to the region of Valparaíso. On August 16, 1906 both towns were devastated by an earthquake.
