Vincent Chancey

Vincent Chancey ( born 1950 in Chicago) is an American jazz horn player and composer, known mainly through participation in the Carla Bley band and Lester Bowie 's Brass Fantasy.

Life and work

Chancey learned at school cornet and attended the Conservatory from the age of twelve, to take on the French horn. After studying at the University of Illinois School of Music and the Southern Illinois University (Bachelor) in 1973 he went to New York to learn from the jazz French horn pioneer Julius Watkins. Chancey, who until then had played no jazz, earned a scholarship for his formative years there and played this time with Monty Waters, Alison Mills, Don Cherry, David Murray, Muhal Richard Abrams, George Russell and Wilber Morris. 1976 became known as a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Between 1978 and 1984 he was part of the ensemble of Carla Bley. He also played with Gil Evans, Chick Corea, Lester Bowie, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Count Basie, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, Lionel Hampton, Cassandra Wilson, Carmen McRae, Shirley Horn and Arto Lindsay. He was also on recordings by Peggy Lee, Ashford & Simpson, Melba Moore, Aretha Franklin, BeBe Winans, Whitney Houston, the Edwin Hawkins Singers and Gal Costa involved.

With its earthy tone, he shows that clay formation also in the forest horn is jazz standard possible. Currently, he plays among others in John Fischer interface, Dave Douglas Brass Ecstasy and the Charles Mingus Orchestra, but also leads his own trio.
