Vincenzo Catena

Vincenzo Catena (c. 1470/80 probably in Venice; ibid † Between 10 and September 29, 1531, Vincenzo di Biagio also ) was an Italian painter.

Life

Catena was the son of probably originating from Istria Biagio Catena. About his artistic beginnings are unknown, but the earliest paintings show a marked proximity to Antonello da Messina, Cima da Conegliano and Benedetto Diana. To his own style he found through his involvement with the works of Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione in particular.

Catena must be quickly reached great prestige because it was used by the Doge Leonardo Loredan in contracts early. Within a short time he became a busy and wealthy man. This is even more amazing than his works, unlike those of his contemporaries, Giorgione, Titian, Palma il Vecchio and other strange remained backward and not nearly reached their level. Already around 1520 lists Marcantonio Michiel, with whom he was apparently friends, numerous works of his hands, which were in various private collections in Venice. Besides Madonna and altarpieces Catena was especially appreciated as a portrait painter. This earned him a good contacts with scholars and especially the Venetian nobility. In 1528 he was a witness at the wedding of the sister of Sebastiano del Piombo. On September 10, 1531 he changed his will and last time on 29 September of the same year he was already dead.
