Vincenzo Maria Altieri

Vincenzo Maria Altieri (* November 24, 1724 in Rome, † February 10, 1800 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Life

Altieri was in 1743 appointed Apostolic prothonotary and held that post from 1747. In the same year he also became prelate of the Congregation Council and Speaker of the Apostolic Signatura. After several years as a Pontifical Vizelegat in Urbino and in the Romagna, he became in 1758 governor of Ancona. In 1764 he returned to the Curia.

After Altieri 1776 Prefect of the Papal Household, was Pope Pius VI created him. on 23 June 1777 for cardinal pectore what was published on December 11, 1780. He was in the following years cardinal protector of numerous monasteries, churches and universities and took leadership roles in several cardinal congregations. After three other titles diaconiae Cardinal Altieri was from 1794 cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Via Lata.

He took his leave on March 12, 1798 by Cardinal Office, which was accepted by the Pope on 7 September the same year. His retreat had to do with the political situation and his poor health. During the period of vacancy after the death of Pius VI. he asked on February 8, 1800 Cardinal Dean Gian Francesco Albani to return to the College of Cardinals, which, however, by his own death two days later a request was frail.

He was the nephew of Lorenzo Altieri and Cardinals Giovanni Battista Altieri. He was also the uncle Cardinals Alessandro Mattei and Lorenzo Girolamo Mattei.
