Vinita is a city of 5,992 inhabitants ( official estimate 2006), in Craig County, Oklahoma, USA. It is the county seat of Craig County.

The metropolitan area is 11.3 km ² and contains no water surfaces.

History

Vinita, Oklahoma is the second oldest city of the State of Oklahoma. It was founded in 1871 as two railway lines reached the area (Atlantic & Pacific and Missouri - Kansas -Texas). At that time it was called Downing Ville. The name was later changed by the sculptor Vinnie Ream, the creator of the life-size statue of Abraham Lincoln at the United States Capitol in Vinita.
