Mount Vinson (also Vinson Massif ) is often not provided with 4892 m with 5140 m, the highest mountain of Antarctica - which is why he is one of the Seven Summits.

The mountain was named after the U.S. Senator Carl Vinson, which aided the exploration of Antarctica.

On a flight to the U.S. Air Force through the Sentinel Range of the mountain in 1957 was discovered. The first ascent was made on December 17, 1966 by an expedition of the American Alpine Club - financially supported by the National Geographic Society and with the support of the U.S. Navy.

The difficulties of Ascension are not in the technical difficulty of the climb, but are caused by the extreme conditions in Antarctica, cold and storms. The distance to the South Pole is about 1200 kilometers. All these points lead to high costs of an expedition.

Starting point for most expeditions to Mount Vinson is almost 120 kilometers away Patriot Hills base camp.
