History

The Stockholm landscape is characterized by many sharp valleys that run from east to west, from the archipelago up to the lake Mälaren. The Vinterviken is such a valley. The name " Vinterviken " has been known since the 17th century. He was referring to a wintry trail linkage on the frozen lake Mälaren that connected the islands in the lake with the city of Stockholm.

Alfred Nobel

In 1865, Alfred Nobel bought the entire area after it had banned the authorities to continue its explosive experiments in the Södermalm district of Stockholm. The place had been chosen with care, a narrow valley with high, protective walls of rock, surrounded by forest and with direct access to the lake Mälaren. The neighbors had to sign a certificate stating that they had nothing against Nobel's explosive experiments. In the same year Nobel left Stockholm and launched a similar plant in Krummel, near Hamburg.

In Vinterviken explosive mines Factories were built ( explosive bunker for testing of products), bearing, housing and a port to which the goods were transported on a narrow-gauge railway. Also from abroad kept Nobel continuous contact with the factory management in Vinterviken and made visits until shortly before his death in 1896.

In June 1868 a large explosion occurred in the laboratory, in which 14 people died, it was the greatest disaster in the history of Vinterviken. 1874 the factory exploded, and 12 people lost their lives. The handling of the raw materials was extremely dangerous, many workers were not older than 30 years. Only in 1905 there was insurance. The manufacture of dynamite was set in Vinterviken 1921, but Nitro Nobel AB had certain activities until the 1980s.
