Violant of Bar

Violante of Bar (also Jolanthe or Yolande ) (* 1365, † August 13, 1431 ) was the wife of John I and Queen of Aragon.

Life

Violante was the eldest daughter of Duke Robert I of Bar and his wife Maria, Princess of France ( 1344-1404 ). They married in May 1380 in Montpellier the Aragonese Crown Prince Johann I

Violante man devoted himself even after his accession to the throne in 1387 with fondness of hunting. However, he was also highly educated and interested in art. He had been married once before he married against the wishes of his father Violante of Bar.

This was evaluated negatively by the Aragonese contemporaries and historians as strangers. She was accused of a lavish life and an undue influence on politics. The yard of the couple became an intellectual center, but was enormously expensive, which was blamed by his contemporaries, especially Violante. Her husband left her a large part of the government. But it did not act against his will.

It succeeded the family de Fortià to disempower, the IV of Aragon with Sibila de Fortià (1350-1406) had occupied the fourth marriage Peters key policy positions. Violante was able to govern largely without the Cortes.

She pulled Aragón foreign policy from his old connections and urged it increases to the side of France. During the Hundred Years War the country was now clearly on the side of France. In 1390, Violante arranged a marriage of their daughter Yolande with the heir of Naples Ludwig.

After her husband's death in 1396 it came to succession problems. From the previous marriages of the king had only daughters. The daughter Johanna was married to Count Mathieu of Foix since 1392.
