The violets breast Hummingbird ( Sternoclyta cyanopectus ) is a hummingbird from the monotypic genus Sternoclyta. It occurs in Venezuela.

Description

The Violet Hummingbird chest reaches a length of 12-13 centimeters. The weight is 8.4 to 9.4 grams in males and from 9.0 to 10.3 grams in females. The black bill is slightly curved. In the male, the top is shimmering green grass. The throat is glistening emerald green. The breast is characterized by a teardrop-shaped glittery purple bruises. The rest of the underside is gray with beige gold green louvers on the flanks. The tail is bronze-green. The female is colored at the top as the male. The underside is off-white with gold-green fins. The abdomen is reddish center. The immature resemble the females.

Occurrence and habitat

The Violet Hummingbird breast inhabited the Andean region in the Cordillera de Mérida in the Venezuelan states of Táchira, Mérida and Lara and the Cordillera de la Costa Central in Miranda. Its habitat is moist forests and woodlands but also secondary forests and coffee plantations in the subtropical zone of lower sea level to an altitude of 1900 m. Occasionally, it is also found in rain forests and cloud forests in the tropical zone.

Way of life

The violets breast hummingbird feeds on the nectar of heliconia flowers. The clutch consists of two eggs, which are incubated by the female.
