Vioolsdrif

Province

Vioolsdrift ( Afrikaans: Vioolsdrif ) is a small town and border crossing into Namibia in the village of Nama Khoi, District Namakwa, Northern Cape Province in South Africa. In 2011, there were 599 people.

Geography

Vioolsdrift is about 300 meters above sea level on the south side of the Orange River and is connected to the opposite Namibian border town Noordoewer on the north side of the river just across the road bridge. The place is located about 350 kilometers from the mouth of the Orange River into the Atlantic Ocean; up to Springbok distance of 110 km.

Economy

The main economic factor is agriculture. For irrigation the river are taken each year about 15 million cubic meters of water. Alfalfa and vegetables are the main products. The irrigation canal is fed by Vioolsdrift - weir which is a few miles upstream from the border crossing. There are plans to build a dam as a joint project between Namibia and South Africa before Vioolsdrift. Currently, there is no way the water of the Orange River and its tributaries for periods of impound; The next dam is 1400 km upstream at Vanderkloof.

Vioolsdrift is connected by the South African National Road N7 Cape Town.
