Viðoy

Viðoy [vi ː ɔi ] (Danish VIDERO ) is one of 18 islands in the Faroe Islands, where the second largest of the six northern islands.

The island's name comes from Faroese Vidur = wood. So Viðoy means wood island. Responsible for this is the driftwood, which is found in large quantities in the bay Viðvík on the east coast. On the treeless Faroe Islands, which was formerly an important source for the coveted building material.

The Cape Enniberg ( 754 m) at the northern tip Viðoys not only forms the northernmost point of the Faroe Islands, but also the highest cliff in the world.

Viðoy is connected by the road embankment in Hvannasund with the western neighbor island Borðoy where the regional metropolis is Klaksvík. From Hyannasund also the mail boat Masin runs to the east offshore islands Fugloy and Svinoy.
