Active reactors ( gross ):

The nuclear power plant Virgil C. Summer is near the town of Jenkinsville in Fairfield County, 32 kilometers northwest of the capital of South Carolina, Columbia. Here also the building of the experimental reactor Carolinas - Virginia Tube Reactor ( CVTR ) is just outside the village Parr. The CVTR was a heavy water reactor with 17 MW capacity. The Monticello Reservoir supplies the reactors with cooling water.

The plant has a Westinghouse pressurized water reactor. The reactor was overhauled and has received an extension to its operating license from 2022 to 2042.

Since 2006, an application rests with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC ) to build a second and possibly third reactor. The owners are planning a Westinghouse AP1000 reactor type. In January 2010, permits for construction and operation of a total of 14 reactors were awarded at 7 locations, including Virgil C. Summer.

About two-thirds (66.7 %) of the complex include the operator of the South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (part of SCANA ). The remaining 33.3 % is owned by the South Carolina Public Service Authority.
