Virgile Rossel

Virgile Rossel ( born March 19, 1858 in Tramelan, Canton Bern, † May 29, 1933 in Lausanne, home justified in Tramelan ) was a Swiss lawyer, politician (FDP) and author.

Life

The son of the farmer and mayor Julien Rossel graduated from the Matura at Literargymnasium in Pruntrut and studied law and literature at the universities of Leipzig, Strasbourg, Berne, where he also received his doctorate in 1879, and Paris. He obtained the patent attorney and opened in 1881 in Courtelary a law firm.

From 1883 to 1912 he was an Associate Professor of French law at the University of Bern, which he directed in 1894 and 1908 as rector. From 1896 to 1912 he was the National Council ( 1909/10 National President ). During this time he also served as co-author of the Swiss Civil Code.

From 1912 Rossel was a federal judge on the Second Civil Division, 1929/30, he chaired the Federal Court. In 1932 he resigned and was replaced by his son Jean Rossel.

Rossel wrote fiction, literary history and historical writings. In 1909 he received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Geneva.
