Virgin Mobile

Virgin Mobile is the brand name of several mobile operators in the UK, Australia, France, India, Canada, Poland, South Africa and the USA. These were each founded as a partnership between the Virgin Group with a major network operators on site and operate as independent companies.

Market position and products

Virgin Mobile UK is the fourth largest mobile operator in the country, but not operate its own network. It initially used the infrastructure of Deutsche Telekom and T -Mobile and Orange now also, since they have merged their UK subsidiaries to Everything Everywhere. Virgin Mobile offers in the UK and in other countries mainly to prepaid plans. In the U.S. prepaid cards before the market entry of the Virgin company still unknown.

The newly founded Virgin Mobile Latin America plans from 2012 with the partner Tribe Mobile to enter the market in several South and Central American countries. In Chile, mobile services are to be offered in the first quarter, in Mexico before the end of 2012.

Ownership

Most Virgin Mobile companies were acquired after a relatively short time from a larger network operator in the country, mostly from the original partner companies over whose networks the services have been realized. So took over on July 4, 2006, the cable company NTL: Telewest all shares of Virgin Mobile UK. Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson was on an exchange of shares more than 10 % of NTL Telewest, which has since been renamed Virgin Media. In Australia, Virgin Mobile Australia was already merged in April 2006 with a subsidiary of the network operator Optus. Virgin Mobile Canada has been one May 7, 2009 to Bell Canada and Sprint Nextel has announced that it will take over in the fourth quarter of this year for 483 million U.S. dollars, Virgin Mobile USA. All buyers have secured the rights to further long-term use of the brand name of the Virgin Group before the acquisition.
