Virginia is a city in St. Louis County in Minnesota. It is located in the northeast of the U.S. federal government in the Mesabi Range and has approximately 9,150 inhabitants.
Geography
Virginia is located approximately 85 kilometers northwest of Duluth on U.S. Route 53 and U.S. Route 169 According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 49.7 square miles, of which 0.9 square miles of water.
History
In March 1892 it was discovered in the region around Virginia iron ore deposits. This led to the founding of the town in September 1892. The name Virginia was a suggestion by David T. Adams, a researcher who had searched in the area after ore deposits. On June 18, 1893, the town was almost completely destroyed by fire. Week long drought had led to the outbreak of major fire. 1894 was the place rebuilt the city rights. But on June 7, 1900 destroyed a forest fire which spread to the city, again large parts of Virginia. Only the outlying residential areas were spared.
In the iron ore mine Norman Mina in 1911 in a landslide in the open pit mine, 14 workers were killed in 1918 called for an explosion with the Silver Mine Silver Mine 18 fatalities. In addition to mining, the forestry and timber industry has developed into a second major economic factor. Since the second half of the 20th century, the importance of these sectors continues going down, so now is the economic center of gravity in the tertiary sector in the field of tourism and recreation.

According to the 2000 census living in Virginia 9157 people in 4333 households and 2270 families. Ethnically, the population itself is made up of 95.2 percent white population as well as other smaller or more groups. 0.8 percent of the population regard themselves as Hispanics.
In 4333 22.5% of households children live below the age of 18, 38.4 % live in married couples, 10.7 % live in single women and 47.6 % are non family households. 42.6 % of all households were made up of individuals and 19.6% had someone living alone over 65 years. The average household size is 2.00 persons, the families of 2.73.
In relation to the entire city, the population is composed of 19.0 % under the age of 18, 9.4 % from 18 to 24, 25.0 % between 25 and 44 years, 23.3% between 45 and 64 years and 23.2% over 65 years. The median is 43 years. Approximately 53.8 % of the population is female.
The median income for a household is $ 28,873, a family of $ 43,419. The per capita income is $ 17,776. Approximately 15.9 % of the population and 10.6 % of families are below the poverty line.
