Virgule

Virgeln called the slashes that were formerly used for structure of phrases and sentences which are now replaced in this function by commas, which resonates to this day in French and Italian ( virgule / virgola = " comma" ). The use of Virgeln limited to this set in Gothic texts. Even in these, however, was sure that behind a set in Roman word (about a French loan word, which was not traditionally placed in the fracture, but in Roman type ) appeared a comma and no Virgel.

In the course of the 18th century, most German printer shortened the Virgeln on the length of commas.
