Virserum

Virserum is a locality ( Tätort ) in the Swedish province of Kalmar County, the historical province of Småland. The place is located in the municipality of Hultsfred.

Geography

Virserum is located in the highlands of Småland in southern Sweden in a forest and lake landscape on the shores of Lake Virserum ( Virserumssjön ). Through the village of Virserumsån, which flows into the Virserum Lake flows. In and around Virserum there are numerous nature reserves. To the west of the village lies the nature reserve Länsmansängen with many deciduous forests.

History

The place name is already Virserum 1278 mentioned as Widisrum ( forest clearing) for the first time in a document. A settlement of this area was, however, held much earlier. In the vicinity of the town, among other Stone Age tombs were found.

The village has long been the natural market and trading center of the region. Between 1880 and 1980 Virserum was a center of the Swedish furniture industry with up to 40 furniture factories. Today, only an exceptional furniture industry museum at this heyday. The museum is a true to the original and functional replica of a furniture factory from 1920.

On the lakes outside of the settlement, the final battles of the Dackegrottan uprising played from. On the marketplace in Virserum a statue of Nils Dackegrottan Arvid Kallstrom to commemorate the resistance against Gustav Vasa in 1956 erected.
