Virton ( German hosts, Lorraine in the local dialect Viertan ) is a Belgian town in the Walloon Region with 11,508 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). It is located in the province of Luxembourg and is the southernmost city in Belgium. The municipal area is immediately adjacent to France and is just about 25 kilometers west of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Virton is the administrative seat of the arrondissement Virton. Its area roughly corresponds to the historic landscape Gaume, which is why the city is also known as the capital of the Gaume.

Virton itself is next to the eponymous main town of the districts Bleid, Ethe, Latour, Ruette and Saint- Mard.

The next highway exits are located at Habay and Arlon on the A 4 / E 25 Virton has a regional station. Luxembourg Airport is the nearest airport on regional.

Traffic

The town has a station on the railway line Athus - Libramont. Here was formerly connected to the now largely disused railway line Marbehan - Ecouviez.

* The Musée de Virton, 1939 located in the old convent of the Franciscan Recollects, the visitor gets an insight into the history and culture of the Gaume.
