Virudhunagar district

The district Virudhunagar (Tamil: விருதுநகர் மாவட்டம், also: Virudunagar ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Administrative center is the eponymous town of Virudhunagar.

Geography

The district Virudhunagar is located in the southern inland areas of Tamil Nadu. Neighboring districts are Theni in the northwest, in the north of Madurai, Sivaganga in the northeast, Ramanathapuram in the east, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli in the South and Idukki in the West. The latter already belongs to the neighboring federal state of Kerala.

The area of the district of Virudhunagar is 4,280 square kilometers. Most of the district area is flat. In the west, the district Virudhunagar share of the Western Ghats, which form the natural border with Kerala. The highest mountains in the district area are up to 1700 meters high. The rivers in the district of Virudhunagar are all not quite a year carry water.

The district Virudhunagar is divided into the eight taluks Rajapalayam, Srivilliputhur, Sivakasi, Sattur, Virudhunagar, Aruppukkottai, Kariapatti and Tiruchuli.

History

The area of present-day district Virudhunagar came in 1801 under British rule. Initially, the area between the districts of Madurai ( Madura ) and Tirunelveli ( Tinnevelly ) was divided the province of Madras. 1910 was the area now known district for newly established district Ramanathapuram ( Ramnad ). After the Indian independence in 1956, the area was a part of the newly formed State of Madras (now Tamil Nadu ). As an independent district of Virudhunagar district has existed since 1985, when the district Ramanathapuram was divided into the three districts of Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar.

Population

According to the 2011 census, the district Virudhunagar has 1,943,309 inhabitants. Compared to the last census in 2001 the population had grown by 11.0 per cent, slightly slower than in the center of Tamil Nadu ( 15.5 per cent). The population density is 454 inhabitants per square kilometer below the average Tamil Nadu ( 555 inhabitants per square kilometer). 50.4 percent of the residents of the district Virudhunagar live in cities. The degree of urbanization, which is slightly higher than the mean of the state ( 48.5 percent). The literacy ratio, which was 80.8 percent, almost exactly the average of Tamil Nadu ( 80.3 per cent).

The population of the district of Virudhunagar make Hindus according to the 2001 census, 93.5 percent of the vast majority. There are also smaller minorities of Christians ( 3.9 percent ) and Muslims (2.5 per cent).

Attractions

The town of Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar district has with the Andal Temple is an important Hindu shrine. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is also the poet saint Andal is revered here, said to have been born in Srivilliputhur. The Andal temple of Srivilliputhur is one of the 108 Divya Desams or holy places of Tamil Vaishnavism. Its 58.5 -meter-high gopuram ( gate-tower ) today adorns the seal of the state of Tamil Nadu.

Economy and infrastructure

The district Virudhunagar is quite heavily industrialized. The town of Sivakasi is a center of match, fireworks and printing industries. In Rajapalayam and Aruppukkottai to textile industry has settled. Agriculture plays a less important role than in other parts of Tamil Nadu: According to the 2001 census, only 32.1 percent of the working population is employed in the agricultural sector.

The district Virudhunagar has good transport links. The National Highway 7 from Varanasi to Kanyakumari leads in a north-south direction through the district and connects with Virudhunagar Madurai and Tirunelveli. In Virudhunagar the coming from Madurai railway line branches into a route to Kanyakumari and one that leads through the Western Ghats to Kollam in Kerala.
