Visakhapatnam district

Visakhapatnam, also Visakha Zilla ( Telugu: విశాఖపట్నం జిల్లా ) is one of 23 districts in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The administrative center is the city of Visakhapatnam.

Geography

The district is located in the northeast of Andhra Pradesh. He is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal in the west by East Godavari district in the north by the state of Odisha, in the east by the district of Vizianagaram and the south. The coastline is 132 km.

History

The district was under British rule until 1956 and belonged to the State of Andhra. Since then, Visakhapatnam is an administrative unit in the then newly created state of Andhra Pradesh. The district is in its current boundaries since 1979. At that time the district Vizianagaram from parts of the former districts Visakhapatnam Srikakulam was established.
