Viscount Gort

Viscount Gort is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Ireland, named after the family Gort.

Award

The title was awarded in 1816 to John Prendergast - Smyth, a longtime member of the Irish House of Commons, and Governor of County Galway.

As Prendergast - Smyth was unmarried, was the ceremony with a special note that the title can be transferred to the son of his sister Juliana Verecker.

Subordinate title

The first Viscount was in 1810 created Baron Kiltarton of Gort in the County of Galway, also in the Peerage of Ireland, appointed. This title, which is now operated as a subordinate title was provided with the same special notice in favor of his nephew Thomas Verecker as the Viscountswürde.

Another title

The sixth Viscount John Vereker was a famous British officer in both World Wars. He was in 1946 one month before his death, appointed Viscount Gort, of Hamsterley, County Durham. This title was in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

As he had no male descendants at the time of his death, went out this title, unlike the Irish - with his death.
