Viscount Sidmouth

Viscount Sidmouth, Sidmouth of in the County of Devon, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, named after the place Sidmouth, which is supported by the family Addington.

Seat of the family was Upottery Manor in Devon, which was sold in 1953.

Award

The title was awarded to the former British prime minister Henry Addington in 1805.

This was supposed to after the end of his term in 1804, as was customary, an earldom, together with subordinate titles, namely that of an Earl of Banbury obtained. Addington, however, declined because he wanted to keep his seat in the House of Commons. The following year he took over, however, the office of Lord President of the Council in the Cabinet Pitt, to which it then the title of Viscount Sidmouth was awarded.
