Vištytis

Vištytis ( German Wystiten or Wyschtyten ) is a town ( miestelis ) on the northeastern shore of the lake Wystiter in Lithuania. The town is the seat of the homonymous country office of the Rajongemeinde Vilkaviškis and had in 2001 only 566 inhabitants. In the past, the population was higher by a multiple; it has to V.A. reduced by the murder of the Jewish population during the Second World War.

The oldest mention of Vystyčiai dates from the 16th century.

Russian- Lithuanian border town

About the " Dariaus ir Gireno " street in the western part of Vištytis runs the Russian- Lithuanian border. On February 1, 2004 saw a treaty in force which publishes the borders by about 100 meters to the west after 14 years of negotiations between Russia and Lithuania. This Lithuania was an area of ​​about 2 ha. Three Lithuanian families on two farms, which were contained on Russian territory west of the former course of the border, returned by the new border on Lithuanian territory. However, another farm with a Lithuanian family is continued even after the new boundaries in the Russian part of the city. Russia in return received an equally large but uninhabited piece of land as compensation of Lithuania. After the entry into force of the new border treaty border crossing for local border traffic of citizens of the city was closed, so farmers the Lithuanian side lost access to their fields in the western ( Russian ) part of town.

With the entry into force of the Treaty also approximately 525 acres of water surface of the lake Wystiter of Russia were leased to the Lithuanian State for at least 49 years, rendering the de facto border lines for at least 49 years was relocated to the west again.
