Vital Maria Gonçalves de Oliveira

Dom Vital Maria Gonçalves de Oliveira, OFM Cap ( born November 27, 1844 in Itambé, Pernambuco, Brazil, † July 4, 1878 in Paris) was a bishop of Olinda in Brazil. His birth name was civilian, he was Conçalves Antonio de Oliveira Junior known under the name "Dom Vital".

Life

He was born as the first of six children, his parents were Capitano Antonio Conçalves de Oliveira and Antonia de Albuquerque. At the age of 23, he was ordained a priest on August 2, 1868, and called the age of 26 on May 21, 1871, Emperor Pedro II of Brazil to the Bishop of Olinda. He received his episcopal ordination on 17 March 1872 Bishop Pedro Maria de Lacerda. In October 1875 Dom de Oliveira traveled to Rome and was received by the Holy Father, his failing health allowed him but not to return to Brazil. He died at age 33 on July 4, 1878 in Paris, his tomb is located in the Basilica of " Our Lady of Penha " to Recife and is maintained by Capuchin monks. In the Brazilian history Dom Vital was one of the rights of the Catholic Church as martyrs for the faith and defenders. According to him, the Centro Dom Vital, founded in 1922, was named.

Captivity

During the clashes between Freemasonry and the Catholic Church in Brazil, which began in 1873, some episcopal ministry brothers were arrested and deported. Dom Vital strongly protested and appealed to Pope Pius IX. The Pope was in his encyclical Exortae in ista of 20 April 1874, Freemasonry in Brazil and praised Dom Vital as a fighter for justice and freedom of the Catholic Church. 1875 de Oliveira was arrested and taken to the prison in Recife, he participated in the adjudication part in full episcopal regalia. On September 17, 1875 was followed by an imperial amnesty during which Dom Vital and other detainees were released.
