Vitale Candiano

Vitale Candiano († 979 in Venice) was the 24th Doge of Venice. He reigned from 978 to 979

Vitale was probably the son of the 21st Doge Pietro III. Candiano. He was elected in September 978 as a candidate of the opposition to the party of the Orseolo, but thanked after only a few months in office in November 979 and retired as a monk in the monastery of San Ilario back. He died four days after his admission to the monastery, where he was buried. Vitale's daughter Mary married 26 Candiano Doge of Venice, Pietro II Orseolo.
