Vitaly Komar

Vitaly Komar (originally Russian Виталий Анатольевич Комар / Vitaly Komar Anatoljevich; born September 11, 1943 in Moscow) is an American artist.

Life

Komar attended the Art Academy Moscow (1958-1960) and the Stroganov Institute of Art and Design ( 1962-1967 ).

From 1965 to 2003 Komar worked with Alex Melamid. Both initiated Sots Art, the Soviet counterpart to Pop Art Together they were in 1987 at Documenta 8 in Kassel, the first Russian artists who took part in a Documentation.

Komar was also active politically against the system of the Soviet Union left the country over Israel, and later took U.S. citizenship.

Determined in the 90s Komar and Melamid based on opinion polls each " popular " and " unpopular " paintings for different countries and worldwide.
