Vitiaz Strait

Geographical location

The Vitiaz Street (English: Vitiaz Strait) is a strait between the volcanic island of Long Iceland and New Guinea.

Long Iceland was discovered in 1643 by Abel Tasman. But he kept Long Iceland for a part of the main island of New Guinea and sailed not Vitiaz Street. The name Vitiaz Street is reminiscent of the Russian corvette Vityaz, which crossed the strait in 1872.
