Vitreous humour

The vitreous body ( corpus vitreum ) is a component of the eye of vertebrates, is in the anatomy and ophthalmic diagnostics to the so-called middle eye sections. To obtain the shape of the eye, containing a gel-like transparent substance, the vitreous. The vitreous is located between the lens and retina. Consequently crosses the light collected by the lens on its way to the vitreous body the retina. The vitreous body consists of about 98% water and from about 2 % hyaluronic acid and a network of collagen fibers (<< 1%). The referenced fine, three-dimensional network of collagen consists here mainly of collagen type II and IX. The association of hyaluronic acid in this wide-meshed network and the high capacity of hyaluronic acid to bind water, condition the homogeneous gel-like consistency of the vitreous body and its transparency.
